I can't say that I'm a big fan of artist statements, preferring instead to get right to the heart of the matter and view an artist's work. Gary Winogrand demanded that his viewers engage themselves intellectually with his work, rather than asking empty questions such as 'what does your work mean?' All viewers of art bring with them a lifetime of experiences, good and bad, which ought to serve well whatever 'meaning' or 'explanation' they are seeking. If you really want a message, go to Western Union. Likewise the boring and dry conversations about film and equipment. I've used the same film for 15 years, and select whatever camera suits the subject matter. To sum it all up, and borrow a quote from the wonderful Charleston artist Mary Whyte, 'Don't make your artwork perfect. Make it perfectly beautiful.'
That's not too difficult to understand, is it?
